The Music Man

Scott Taylor is the musical director and pianist for 'Broadway Without Borders', which open this Tuesday night at the Chester Playhouse.

How long have you been performing music?
I started piano lessons when I was 7 and by the age of 11 I was playing the organ at our small community church in Dartmouth.

Aside from Karen & Stuart, who do you perform with, and where?
I play organ at various churches filling in for various vacations and short term vacancies.  I accompany local vocalists including Margaret Champion and Ann Watkins. I love the role of accompanist!

How did you connect with Karen & Stuart?
I met Stuart and Karen last summer through a mutual friend. They were looking for a piano player and arranger for their cabaret "Immigrant Intent". The rest is history!

What are some of the challenges of this particular production?
The challenges for me have been personal ones ... like playing handwritten music, or transcribing tunes when there is no printed music available, and playing in the keys of B and F# majors. I'm still trying to understand why composers feel it necessary to write in these keys!  Ha-ha

What are some of the rewards?
The rewards have always been working with such a marvelous group of people. I can't say enough wonderful things about Karen, Stuart, Stephanie and my sister, Fayette. It's also been a great pleasure to get to know and work with Mary Lou and Jenn.

What can audiences expect during the run of Broadway Without Borders?
Two hours of amusement and fun. You will be very impressed with what Stuart and Karen can do.

What's next on your musical agenda?
To continue accompany vocalists and eventually return to studying organ again. It's my desire to bring my organ skills back to where they were when I graduated from university
